LGBTQ PAC focused on gun reform makes endorsement in New Jersey’s Governor race
WASHINGTON, D.C. July 24. 2017 - Pride Fund to End Gun Violence PAC — America’s only national LGBTQ political organization focused solely on gun violence prevention — announced today its endorsement of Phil Murphy for governor of New Jersey. Pride Fund endorsed Murphy based on his longstanding commitment to championing LGBTQ equality and his support of commonsense gun safety reform.
“Phil Murphy understands the issue of gun violence for what it actually is: a public health crisis,” said Jason Lindsay, Executive Director of Pride Fund to End Gun Violence. “For too long, the New Jersey governor's leadership has been susceptible to both the money and interests of special interest groups like the NRA. The majority of New Jerseyans support commonsense gun safety laws such as universal background checks and a high-capacity magazine ban. Murphy is the clear choice in this election.”
“Ensuring that our society lives up to its ideals of tolerance and inclusion is central to a fairer, stronger New Jersey,” said Murphy. “We can never tolerate bigotry and that means making sure that guns are kept out of the hands of those whose hate can lead them to extreme acts. I am proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Pride Fund in support of commonsense laws that will protect our communities and honor the memories of those lost to senseless gun violence.”
For too long, current Governor Chris Christie has stood in the way of common sense gun reform and vetoed legislation that would have made New Jersey communities safer. Murphy’s opponent, Kim Guadagno, is Chris Christie’s handpicked successor and would continue his tradition of dangerous gun policy. As governor, Phil Murphy will champion LGBTQ equality and will advocate for a New Jersey that is more inclusive and safe for all, regardless of their race, sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
Pride Fund has thoroughly reviewed the platform and records of this candidate to assess Murphy’s commitment to protecting the rights of the LGBTQ community and improving the safety of all New Jerseyans. Phil Murphy represents the kind of leader we need, who won’t prioritize the special interests of the gun lobby over the safety of the American people.
